The Halton: Layout

The Halton just below Sule Stack

The Halton is a 70ft charter boat, normally operating out of Stromness. Designed to cope with the Scottish weather she offers a spacious, comfortable platform on which to roam the Scottish Outliers.

There are six twin berth cabins below deck, three on each side of a central corridor with the bunks against the hull. At the forward end of the corridor is a shower and loo, whilst entry is from the aft, emerging onto the deck level behind the wheelhouse.

Above deck there is a large seating area and galley so folk can gather round the table to eat and yarn, a second toilet and plenty of open deck space.

In the engine room a 12 cylinder, 230hp Gardener drives the boat through the water at a regal 8kts. There is the usual plethora of electronics in the wheelhouse: passengers are more than welcome here as I like a yarn too!

The Halton is heated by a deisel Rayburn with a back boiler which heats the water for showers and the radiators throughout the boat. A silenced generator supplies constant 240V electricity.

The Halton carries a small inflatable and outboard to land folk ashore at the various stopovers without a pier large enough to tie up against. The boat's own complement consists of a skipper (me!) and a crew man who also takes the inflatable.

It is not the easiest task to portray the boat on a web page so if there are any questions, or if there is anything I have missed out, don't hesitate to drop me an email.

It goes without saying that the boat meets all required safety legislation regarding her area and type of operation, registered under the Brown Workboat COP, Category II (60nm) with the MCA.
