Scottish Outliers Trip: 7th - 21st July 03

Outliers

Key to Map

The aim of this trip is to visit the Scottish Outliers that jut from the sea to the north and west of the Scottish mainland, taking in the spectacular bird life that inhabits these remote outcrops and landing wherever possible.

The following itinerary is offered to illustrate the aims and ambitions of the trip, but this is far from rigid.

The trip will run between the following dates:

Wed 7th July 03 to Wed 21st July 03

The first day (wed) is effectively a mobilisation day with a rendezvous at Scrabster (approx 16:00hrs) for a get together to meet the group and have a look around the boat. There will be an evening meal and introductory talk arranged.

We will then set off for Sule Stack and Skerry, North Rona, Sula Sgeir, St Kilda, Flannans and the Shiants. The exact timing and order of events will be primarily dictated by the weather but, with good conditions, we will make the best of the choices available.

The weather and the sea conditions will be the determining factor in the trip, especially as it is anticipated that a landing will be made at as many of the destinations as possible. Therefore the order of destinations may be subject to change to make life more comfortable. A day to re-supply mid week has been planned but this window may be altered to coincide with any poor weather, thus allowing the flexibility to be at sea during the best times. It is anticipated that we will pull in to Stornoway to resupply.

The trip is being planned along the principle of "plan for the worst but expect the best". The weather in 2002 (see the trip report here) and 2003 (photos here) was superb so I don't want to paint too pessimistic an outlook!
